What the wealthy watched

Big screen TVs have been a status symbol since the begining of television. Above: The 1949 RCA 9PC41 projection TV was a carry over from the 1948 8PCS41 projection TV in a fancier cabinet. This set was announced on March 17, 1949 and sold for $798.61.

When compared to modern televisions, the cabinetry on these old sets is remarkable. The expensive crotch-grain mahogany bespeaks a different attitude toward how long these items were expected to last.

This early RCA "entertainment center" from 1948 includes a 10" television, 3 band radio - AM/FM/SW, and a 78rpm phonograph changer.

The TRK-12 was RCA's most expensive television in 1939, and the best selling model of the 4 models introduced at the 1939 Worlds Fair, it sold for $600.

From out of the center of the cabinet a motor and gear train lift the 20" CRT out of its storage location into viewing mode. The phonograph, a 78rpm Webster Model 70, is located behind the left door. The Dumont Westminster was announced to the public on May 7, 1946, and sold for $2,495.00, that's $24,000 in today's money.
