Beanie Babies to Afghanistan

Patty writes of the latest AnySoldier shipment to the middle-east:

A wonderful lady in the area has collected Beanie Babies for years and she donated them to us.  There were 138 of them and they were all NEW.  I kept out some for our fundraiser and two of them for my presentations - red, white and blue - a donkey and an elephant. Sort of represents that no matter your political affiliation, you should still support the troops.  I will put them on the table with the picture boards.

I found a terrific sale yesterday (30 cents each) on stuffed animals to go with the Beanie Babies.

I just finished packing them - 6 boxes full of stuffed animals for the troops to give out to 186 local children.  One box going to Iraq and the rest to Cpt Carter at Camp Lowell.  I decided to send the bulk of them to COP Lowell as they are in one of the most isolated areas of Afghanistan where the people are so poor that most of the children have never even seen a toy.  This will create good will with the locals as well as lift the spirits of the troops when they see the faces of the children who receive them.  I have written a letter of thanks on our new stationery to the lady who donated them.

There are also 5 boxes of books and magazines (with various other items to fill in the spaces) going out.  Two to Iraq and three to Camp Lowell.

Thanks to all for your support of this effort.

Turn your computer into a dental tool

A great computer camera gadget for getting a close look at what is going on in your mouth, this device is perfect for people wanting to make sure that a trip to the dentist is necessary after all.  This toothbrush-shaped video camera plugs into your computer's USB port. It has LEDs around the lens to illuminate the inside of your mouth (or even the back of your head). Available from several websites including this one. About $60.

Toyota Winglet

Japanese carmaker Toyota has unveiled a personal electric scooter which can be ridden in a standing position. The "Winglet" is Toyota's compact rival to the iconic Segway. It weighs less than 10 kilogrammes and Toyota says it will be particularly useful in places like airports, shopping centres and hospitals. No more getting lost - Winglet's on-board computer will take you exactly where you need to go. Sonia Legg reports.
