Oddly Enough
Reuters has a regular feature titled Oddly Enough that highlights unusual news stories from around the world. This is a sampling of recent entries. Teams from around the United Kingdom took part in what local media trumpets as the 'messiest of all contests'. The event has been running since 1967. link
A premium watermelon has sold for more than 6,000 U.S. dollars at an auction in Japan. A top quality watermelon grown in Northern Japan is said to have broken the world record for the highest selling price, 6,100 U.S. dollars. Michael Tetlow reports.
Brides gather in New York's Times Sqaure to climb up a cake slice for a $25000 prize. In a competition celebrating the 5th anniversary of WE Channel's "Bridezillas", 10 brides, dressed in wedding gowns and white helmets, gathered in New York's Times Square to scale a giant cake slice. Meghan Gressler of Basking Ridge, New Jersey raced to the top of the 10 foot frosting-covered slide and beamed with delight as she posed for photographs with her fiance and her $25,000 prize. She plans to use the prize money for her dream wedding and new marital home.

Blackie, a 150kg pig who lives on the streets of Taipei City in Taiwan, has become a local celebrity. Basmah Fahim reports.
Triumph's latest solar bra aims to put a photovoltaic charge into undergarment demand - or at least a cellphone. Featuring a built-in solar panel, the bra captures and redistributes the sun's bounty and can generate enough energy to power a cell phone or an iPod. Dan Sloan reports.
A colourful race of self-made beds draws thousands of spectators at an annual German event. Taking part in Fredersdorf, southeast of Berlin, this is the 20th "Bettenrennen" (bed race). Dressed as storks, playboy bunnies and chickens, participants raced past some 5,000 spectators in colourfully made beds, some of which reminded onlookers of everything but a bed. The only criteria necessary to race were that beds had to be "fast, crazy and original."
With the arrival of summer and mango season, India's western city Mumbai plays host to the 6th annual mango eating competition. Around 30 people took part, having to eat as many mangoes as possible in 3 minutes. And if they could stomach any more, the winners were rewarded with a fresh box of the fruit. The competition was a part of the six-day Konkan Festival that started on May 06 and will end on May 12.

The photo for today's
puzzle was sent by Rita, who says she has had this gardenia growing in
her garden for three years and it never flowered until last week.
This is the one and only blossom - so far. Send me your favorite photo
and
we
will cut it into tiny pieces
so that everyone can reassemble it.
