Stunt Driving
It is quite incredible that a professional driver can maneuver an automobile with such consistant precision. If you would like to learn how to drive like this there is a school, where, in three hours you can learn the basics.

Coquina Sunsets

June 2, 2008
The conditions of late have not been good for spectacular sunsets. Here are some of the better photos I have taken in the last couple weeks. I am hoping for better conditions to come.

Coquina Cultivars

Catherine has been nursing this little tree for several years. A gift from her sister, it is a Cordia sebestena, also known as the Geiger Tree. The tree apparently got its name from John J. Audubon. The story is, during his visit to Key West, Audubon saw the tree in the yard of Captain John H. Geiger, and when he inquired about it, no one could tell him what it was, so it became known as Captian Geiger's tree.

The Geiger Tree (Cordia sebestena) is known for its flowers, and is used in landscaping in tropical and sub-tropical areas such as Florida. It has dark green, oval shaped leaves, and grows oval shaped fruits that are edible, but not flavorful. It tolerates droughts, but not frosts. link

Audubon House & Tropical Gardens - Captain Geiger's House - photo by Deror avi
The Audubon House & Tropical Gardens is located at 205 Whitehead Street, Key West, Florida.
Brick-pathed gardens offer a lush one-acre view of orchids, bromeliads and other tropical foliage, an herb garden and 1840-style nursery.
The house has many antique furnishings purchased from estate sales and auctions in Europe.
The house contains 28 first edition works of the famous ornithologist John James Audubon. Audubon visited the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas in 1832 and left Key West having sighted and drawn 18 new birds for his "Birds of America" folio. It is believed that many of those drawings were conceived in the Audubon House garden. Also, Audubon's painting of the white-crowned pigeon features the Geiger tree found in the front yard of the house.
The Audubon House Gallery, separate from the main house features a unique collection of 19th century original Audubon art and a comprehensive selection of John James Audubon's images.
The house was built by Captain John H. Geiger, a harbor pilot and master wrecker, who lived in the house with his wife and nine children, during an era when shipwrecks occurred daily on the off-shore reef.
The house was slated for demolition in 1958, but was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This was the first restoration project in Key West.

Another connection to the tree and Captian Geiger is Geiger Key. Geiger Key is an island in the lower Florida Keys about 5 miles east of Key West. It is located to the south of, and bridged to, Big Coppitt Key via Boca Chica Road (Monroe County Road 941) at approximately mile marker 11 on U.S. Route 1 (or the Overseas Highway). It is home to the small trailer park community of Tamarac, Geiger Key Pub & Grill and Geiger Key Marina. It is part of the census-designated place of Big Coppitt Key, Florida.
It was named after the Geiger tree, Cordia Sebestena L., which in turn was named by John James Audubon for Captain Geiger. Captain Geiger was a successful Key West wrecker with whom Audubon lived during his 1832 stay in the keys. A.D. Bache, in the notes for his Coast Survey conducted in 1861 says of the key: "Geiger's Key is 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. It was in good cultivation in 1855, and was then inhabited by an industrious German, from whom it derived its name."
