Cancelation Notice

Ron reports that due to unusually low water levels the semi-annual submarine race which was to be held on June 13 has been canceled until conditions are more favorable.
Securing your sliding glass door

Recently a Coquina Crossing resident had the unfortunate experience of a burglary. It appears that the criminal entered through the sliding glass patio door. There are many variations of these doors on our homes and some are much more secure than others. There are two simple, inexpensive things that can be done to make your sliding glass door more secure. The first is to put a stick in the track to make it so the door can not slide. The stick should be long enough that the door can not travel more than about a half inch. It is not necessary that the stick be wedged in tightly. A similar option is a metal charley bar as pictured above, which can probably be purchased at hardware stores or home centers.
Many sliding glass doors can be lifted out of their tracks, so the second thing you should do is drill two holes through the overhead track and into the door header. Work 1.5 inch pan head screws into the holes and back them out so the top of the door just clears the screw head. With these screws in place the door can not be lifted out of its track. It is interesting to note that on many doors, lifting them up will release the latch and the door will slide open freely.
