Human Statue of Liberty

It doesn't look like much in this tiny photo, but if you see the larger image it is rather impressive. From the Iowa National Guard website:

On a stifling July day in 1918, 18,000 officers and soldiers posed as Lady Liberty on the parade [drill] grounds at Camp Dodge. [This area was west of Baker St. and is currently the area around building S34 and to the west.] According to a July 3, 1986, story in the Fort Dodge Messenger, many men fainted-they were dressed in woolen uniforms-as the temperature neared 105 degrees Farenheit. The photo, taken from the top of a specially constructed tower by a Chicago photography studio, Mole & Thomas, was intended to help promote the sale of war bonds but was never used. Many examples of Mole's patriotic photographs in true perspective still exist. Pay close attention to the way spatial depth and perspective is defied. As in the Statue of Liberty there are twice as many men in the flame of the torch as in the rest of the design.  link1  link2

Project Puppet

Our mission at Project Puppet is to provide a solid foundation of hand puppet construction techniques for the aspiring puppeteer. It is also our purpose to make available supplies and materials that are basic to professional puppet building. We feel that with these resources at your fingertips, the sky is the limit.

The great thing about most puppet supplies is that you can find them just about anywhere. Ping-pong balls become eyes, wire hangers become arm rods, and a bathroom rug on clearance becomes shaggy hair. However, there are some basic materials that puppet builders often use that aren't readily available at your local craft or hardware store. Some are very hard to find, some are quite expensive, and some can only be bought in bulk quantities. It is our wish to bring as many of these materials as possible to you at affordable prices.

The best thing about building puppets is that in reality there are no rules. If it works - it works. Our hope is that you will use our patterns and instructions as a springboard for your creativity in producing your own original puppet characters.

See the gallery of puppets made from their patterns. The variety is quite remarkable, as can be seen here - these three puppets are all the same basic pattern.

Cookies

Julia sent a message about the North Pole. That's the website - NorthPole.com. It seems that at the North Pole, Mrs. Claus' cookbook is online and has just about every Christmas cookie recipe you can imagine. But that's not all. Other chapters of her cookbook are also online - Fudge and Candy; Cakes; Pies; Breads; and Other Favorites. There must be hundreds of great recipes to be found.

Vintage Wedding Dresses

Cherished Online Vintage Bridal Salon has a wide selection of dresses from the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. They thoroughly inspect every dress to insure it is in excellent condition - no loose buttons, working zippers, strong seams - and give it a proper cleaning. To go with the dresses they also have a assortment of vintage veils and headpieces, gloves, garters and other accessories.

The Un-Naturalist

Interesting photos are everywhere, waiting to be discovered. Occasionally I am successful finding them. The Un-Naturalist is a series of photos of unnatural objects found in a natural setting - in other words, litter, trash and all manner of debris. It is easy to ignore litter. But when litter becomes a source of creativity, you search for it. Once found, and the photo has been made, litter is given a proper disposal. Thus with every picture, the landscape gets a bit cleaner. Everyone is invited to participate and submit their photographs.
